Brendan Exemplifies 'Team-First' and Selfless AttitudeĀ

Blue Star Coach/Alumni Brendan Black (Hun ’15, Villanova ’19) is heading into the upcoming season as one of the three captains for Villanova. Being voted captain by your peers is a tremendous honor, and we wanted to highlight the character traits that make Brendan a successful leader and teammate. At Blue Star, we teach that character is everything and Brendan is yet another role model for our all-stars to follow. Brendan is joined by several Blue Star alumni at Villanova as well, including his brother Owen Black, Owen Prybylski, Luke Prybylski, Colin Crowley and Chris Donovan.

"I'll go Wherever Coach Needs Me" Mentality
Throughout the course of his high school and college career, Brendan played crease attack, offensive midfield, defensive midfield and long stick. While many players would have a hard time changing positions at such a high-level, Brendan adjusted to each position in order to help his team win. He found that he could contribute in different parts of the lineup. He was able to adapt his game in each scenario and role. The “Team-First, I’ll go wherever coach needs me” is the exact attitude that makes for great teammates and leaders

When it came time to vote on captains for this year, Brendan’s teammates chose him as one of their three captains. Despite not having a starting role for the last three years, his teammates still view him as one of the leaders of the team. To every younger player out there, the lesson inherent here is huge – you don’t need to be the top goal scorer or the shutdown defenseman to be a leader and valuable teammate. Adopting a healthy attitude like Brendan’s can make all the difference.

Here's what Brendan has to say on being named captain this year:

“Being named a captain for Villanova this season was an awesome feeling. To have my teammates choose me to be one of the leaders this year was something that I will never forget.”

Brendan on switching positions:

“Going from being an offensive midfield to an LSM took some adjusting, but it is definitely a decision that I’ve been happy with. All younger players should not be afraid to try other positions. It can only help in making you a more well-rounded player and teammate. Additionally, always work hard on the field and in the classroom. Putting in that extra hour hitting the wall or studying will only help you in the long run.”

Coaches Whitlow & Green on Brendan...
During his time at The Hun School, Brendan was a three-time captain for Head Coach MV Whitlow. In his final year at Hun, the team finished its season ranked #2 in the nation. Here is what Coach Whitlow had to say about Brendan Black:

“He will find a way to create victory and lead. Because of his natural leadership, he will impact any situation he is in for the better.  He has always combined a genuine compassion for others with a confident courage, and it's that combination of traits that make him a natural leader.  He's tough and thoughtful; wise beyond his years.”

Don Green director of Blue Star All-Stars had the following to say about Brendan and his involvement with the players and parents:

“Brendan displays the character that we would like to instill in all of the young men we work with. It is truly a blessing to have a role model like Brendan working with our boys.”
